An example of such a laughable absurdity is found in that which conflicts with our deepest and most unalterable convictions. Yet a closer inspection will show that though the point of view of these writers may approximate to that of the comic poet, it remains distinct. To what extent this at last was carried may be seen in the Welsh codes, where every hair of the eyelash is rated at a penny.[14] This system introduced into legal proceedings a commercial spirit which seems strangely at variance with the savage heroism commonly attributed to our barbarian ancestors. Its name was _Cincalco_, which means the House of Abundance; for no want, no dearth, no hunger and no suffering, were known there.
